An official statement relating to the 1st XI League match between Richmond & Hampstead

During the 1st XI match between Hampstead and Richmond, there was on on-field incident which has subsequently been the subject of much debate both within the clubs concerned and elsewhere.

At the time Richmond’s players, having watched the incident both live and on the video stream, believed that there had been inappropriate behaviour from a Hampstead player. Consequently, in the heat of the moment, they took steps to overturn what they perceived to be an injustice.

Unfortunately, in doing so, they clearly overstepped the boundaries of acceptable behaviour, both at the time and subsequently. We now recognise that this was both misguided and inappropriate under any circumstances, not only against the Spirit of Cricket but also a contravention of Law 42.

Following a more detailed examination of the video evidence, it is now completely clear that the Hampstead player concerned did not do anything that could or should be seen as deliberately inappropriate. We very much regret that this perception was subsequently promoted through social media by individuals who have no connection whatsoever to Richmond CC or any of our players. This was both unfair and inaccurate and we urge all clubs and players across Middlesex not to allow any suggestion that the player concerned was in any way to blame.

Ultimately the match itself was a close and exciting encounter between two committed and determined teams and we very much hope that it will be ultimately remembered for some excellent individual performances by a number of players from both sides. As a club, Richmond CC is fully committed to playing positive cricket in the right way. At times last Saturday, we did not do so and we fully acknowledge the error of our ways.
