Jack sparkles but 1's fumble

Jack sparkles but 1's fumble

Chris Goldie13 Aug 2023 - 14:55

15 year old Jack Nelson lit up a breezy Old Deer Park with 188 off 93 balls but the 1's lose a crucial match at Harrow Town.

Jack Nelson who made his 1st XI debut two weeks ago smashed an exceptional 188 for the 2nd XI as they took a step closer to promotion back to the Premier Division of the second tier. Having won the toss, the 2's stumbled to 18 for 2 before Nelson was joined by KD, more than 30 years his senior. What happened next was quite exceptional. Showing all of his skills, the young Middlesex Academy player struck Highgate's bowlers to all parts, hitting 21 fours and 11 sixes before being caught on the boundary after a stand of 295, the 5th highest in MCCL history since internet records began.
Once Jack had departed, KD continued to strike out sharing a partnership of 82 with Huzefa Sajawal, KD scoring 58 of the runs. After the fireworks, the tail did not wag but Richmond were still able to post a formidable target of 407 off 45. Highgate gamely tried but evenutally fell to a 201 run defeat. There were 3 wickets for Olly Leedham and Jack Nelson and 2 for Dru Shori. The win maintains a 21 point lead over Twickenham and Barnes. A win next week will see Zain's team clinch both promotion and the title.
Meanwhile at Harrow Town, the 1's hopes of promotion literally slipped through their fingers as vital dropped catches saw the hosts chase down a target of 210. Earlier a number of Richmond batsmen had got in but not gone on as Harrow Town bowled steadily. In reply an early wicket gave us hope and when Vansh Jani caught Murad, the hosts were 58 for 3. However in the next two overs, both batsmen were dropped and whilst Usman was dismissed after a partnership of 59, it was Mishra, dropped on 26, who held the chase together finishing on 94 not out. With North London losing to Harrow St Mary's, this was a chance for Richmond to place themselves right back in the promotion places but it was not to be. With three games remaining, all we can do is win and hope that results elsewhere go our way.
The 3's also suffered a disappointing defeat. Led by Arun Bhasin's 5 for 23, Hampstead were dismissed for 166 but they had been 57 for 7 at one stage. In reply, only Arun Veluswamy, Hugo Knowles and Luke Dudley made double figures as we were bowled out for just 76. The defeat leaves the 3's in 3rd place 24 points off leaders Barnes.
Rhodri Evans' 4's gained a vital win over Winchmore Hill 3's dismissing their opponents for 171 and chasing them down for the loss of 8 wickets, youngsters Will Smith and Luka Fearn scoring 100 runs between them. The win gives the 4's a 22 point cushion. One more win will see them safe in Division 1 of the MCCL 3rd Tier.
The 5's won easily against Southgate 3's bowling them out for 80 and knocking them off for the loss of 4 wickets. The 5's are comfortable in 5th place.
