Amongst Will's claims to fame is that he "scored 500 runs more than anyone else last season" and didn't win a single player of the day last season. In short, Will has had tremendous success opening the batting for RCC. Here are his tips on one of his favourite shots - the On Drive.

As a an opening batter, there are often gaps in the field early on from mid-wicket to mid-on. This shot allows you to seize the initiative when the bowlers attack the stumps. It is also an attacking option to the ball swinging in or spinning back into you.

Key points to remember:

  1. Movement - Small, dynamic foot movement, ideally in line with middle to leg stump and not wide.
  2. Balance and alignment - Ensure head aligns with the trajectory of the ball (don't fall away to the offside)
  3. Straight bat face coming through
  4. Timing - let the ball come to you and play the shot under your eyes. Playing this shot well is all about timing and not about power.

Hope you enjoy the tips and drills. Stay safe and well and I look forward to seeing you at ODP soon.
